Her metallic left wing was nothing like her natural right one. It just wouldn't flap!

"Maritox, you must try harder! All our females must fly."

She nodded to Doctor Xolow, knowing she right. The elder women protected the island, and they did so by flight. It was imperative. But she was only twelve, and flying lessons were only given for two hours twice a week.

Well, for normal girls with normal wings, they were two hours a day twice a week.

But she had her wing ripped beyond repair by a certain bully, a bully who was soaring with the others right now and taunting her when the doctor and teacher weren't looking. Maritox had to train five times a week for an hour, and if she didn't get off the ground, she had to come back twice in the same day.

Those were terrible days. Today was one of them.

"Psst," a tiny finger tapped the back of Maritox's ear. "I'm here. Flap again."

The only upside to her amputation and subsequent metallic wing replacement was that Maritox met Lilligon, the tiniest fairy in all the world. Lilligon was shunned by the other fairies for her diminutive size. But the little one knew her magic was still useful, and to prove it, she secretly became a physical therapist in the wing division. Patients like Maritox just needed a little help.

Maritox focused. Her right wing flapped, tilting her. Then there was a tiny tickle. The metallic left wing flapped! As Lilligon cheered her on, Maritox took off. Not just a little hovering above the ground, but flight. At that moment she felt like herself again. Hope filled her heart that one day she would lead a flight team. It's trickier than writing only what you've lived, but I think that caution makes too many writers never diversify the casts of their fiction. And that's bad, too.
