Eminem owes a literary debt to this guy? |
I'm the featured guest today over at Anne Gallagher's blog, where she interviews me about all things poetry. Stop on by
HERE to discover who my favorite poets are, what it means to "think like a poet," how writing can be like having a sprained ankle, and how Eminem fits into the history of poetic expression (I guarantee you'll be surprised). I also suggest how we might make poetry as trendy as knitting and vegan diets.
Can you name the guy in this photo? He's best known for the poem "Howl," which begins with the line "I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness...".
Do you have any unusual or surprising literary influences?
I'll take a stab and say Ferlinghetti only because I know it's not Dylan Thomas. lol
ReplyDeleteFunny, I just wrote a post for next week about my earlier influences and I realized it wasn't pretty. At least now I can say I owe Jane Austen a debt of gratitude.
You're very close--this guy was a compadre of Ferlinghetti's.
DeleteI think it's much more interesting to read a writer whose influences are very broad than one who has stuck in their own genre ghetto, so to speak. Looking forward to your post!
I thought Jeff Goldbloom right away, but I know that's not it. But he is a dead ringer for him! LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL. Yep, pretty close resemblance, though Goldblum has a narrower nose. James Franco actually played this guy in a film in 2010.
DeleteCool.
