Just in time for today's "Indie Kissing" blogfest, Every Day Poets published my poem about my first kiss.

NORTH AND SOUTH

That splish-splash summer night you chose me
with a touch of your toe and slow smile....

I never did see that sweet guy again. His name was Russell Mc-Something-I-can't-remember. We exchanged a few letters, which was the death of that relationship. At 14, I was only going to invest in a long-distance relationship with a guy who was eloquent (he wasn't. Not even a little). :-D

Was your first kiss a wonderful memory or a not-so-great one?

  1. Lovely poem. My fave line--A deep dive and you bubbled under me. :) Happy <3 day Laurel!

  2. Whispering Dixie into me??? Oh what a great way to describe a kiss!!! Love it. Also loved this alliteration:

    listening to your languid tales
    of alligators, telling my most
    shivery snowstorm stories

    1. Thanks, Margo. It was fun to play with North/South contrasts in composing this bit of nostalgia about the sweet Florida boy from gator land.

  3. Sha-zam. I might have to start reading more poetry. Adore the title!

    1. I kind of shamelessly stole it from Elizabeth Gaskell, though her novel from the 1850s isn't at all romantic, it's dark in a Dickensian kind of way.

Still works for an exploration of regional US conflicts though. :-)

    1. Thanks Fida. I write fiction, too. But this poem's publication worked well for double-duty in the blogfest. :-)

  7. I love it! Will click over and vote now! My first kiss? Well, it was weird. I was 9, and it was with one of my older brother's friends. I think I posted about it a long time ago...

Didn't like it much. Didn't try it again til I was like 16--LOL! :D That one was better~ <3

    1. Thanks, Leigh! Nine is pretty young to have boys throwing themselves as you. Would've freaked me out too! :-D I wasn't quite 14 when this happened. On a youth group mission trip, no less. He went to the church that was hosting us.

  8. So cute! I love it. I ran away from my first kiss. Literally. Took off and barricaded the door. Guess I wasn't ready! LOL

    1. That's hilarious. Personally, I found the whole riding on a guy's naked shoulders more weirdly intimate than the kiss itself. Actually the whole thing was a bit strange when I think about it. I was the quiet church girl who discovered this grit I rarely acknowledged having.

  9. I don't generally "get" poems, but I loved this! Such a great, unique entry. :)

I honestly can't remember my first kiss. Not sure if that's good or bad.

    1. Glad you were willing to give it a try. I seek to write accessible poems that open up the world, not leave a reader scratching her head.

Not remembering seems more good than bad, I guess? If it had been an extremely bad experience, it would still haunt you.

    1. Thanks so much, Rachel. Anticipated kisses can be pretty wonderful too, as much as surprise ones like mine. :-)

    1. Thanks, Sharon. It took me a long time to work up the nerve to submit that one to a publication because it's so intimate.
