Q4U: How might you spin this prompt in an unexpected direction? How about as suspense or farce?
Dark comedy for sure! I can picture it too... I can't imagine what the anxiety could do.
ReplyDeleteEvery sneeze would be as frightening as a hurricane! :-) Have fun with it, and happy writing!
DeleteI love writing about characters who have disorders and strange behaviors. My next novel will feature a character who is a hypochondriac. You might like "Everything, Everything" by Nicola Yoon. A character who is allergic to Everything.

It's always interesting to see how a phobic person copes with everyday things they consider perils. Thanks for the book rec--sounds fascinating.
DeleteOh yeah. Dark comedy is a given on that one. Do you know Sylvester on Scorpion?
ReplyDeleteHave fun with it!
DeleteSorry, are those author last names? Dark comedy specialist we all need to read?
Poor hypochondriac. Probably going to end up with a serious case of cooties.
ReplyDeleteV is for Vaxxed, the movie
Or apoplexy, the moment the first little tyke sneezes. :-)
DeleteHi Laurel - I'd ridicule Mr (has to be a Mr!) hypochondriac ... what on earth is he doing in a school in the first place - not setting an example that's for sure ... if they had a germ prison with a gallery - I'd usher him in that direction!! and get the students to spend time in the gallery coughing and spluttering! I'm kind of nice - aren't I ... cheers Hilary

Lots of reasons he might be visiting a school--perhaps a textbook salesman, perhaps a tradesman who needs to install something in the school (new windows, upgraded heating system, replacement chalkboards), perhaps a parent who keeps his kid slathered in antibacterial hand sanitizer.
DeleteI can't help it, the word vigilant always reminds me now of Mad-Eye Moody barking "constant vigilance!"
ReplyDeleteMust...resist...desire to reread all Harry Potter books...
LOL. Sorry to have sparked that particular tangent. Though it might be a fun detail to work into your hypochondriac's thought life--that he must be like Moody when in the presence of germy children.
DeleteGreat prompt! I am always looking for ideas for a monthly group I facilitate.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post, the list, and the process. If we don't all start living from our core values, our inner self, our world is in danger!
WELLNESS flows into my life.
Affirmations for a Good Life
Thanks, Beth. I've tried to share a variety of writing prompts, some more dark, some thought provoking, some adventurous, some silly in order to stir folks' imaginations.
