Q4U: How might you spin this prompt in an unexpected direction? How about as dystopian or epic fantasy?
I could spin this prompt in a different direction by writing a story on how an 8 year old my feel on Eid, a muslim holiday. It celebrates the day after a month's worth of fasting.

ReplyDeleteIt's sort of the apex of unadulterated excitement, isn't it? And yes. I've tried to mix some lighter prompts in with the heavier stuff for the sake of variety.
DeleteHolidays are the best when you're a kid, aren't they? Except for trying to fall asleep the night before. My daughter stays up all night eating snacks and reading, while I, on the other hand, sleep extremely well after all the work of wrapping presents or hiding eggs or packing for the vacation.

For sure. A bit less fun for the parents. Though it might be fun writing experiment to role-switch--the kid is in a sleepy phase of a growth spurt, and Mom is bouncing off the wall with excitement looking forward to all the fun the family will have with the new toys.
DeleteThe eight year old has never been so excited for Christmas Day. It is the day his mother returns from her tour of duty. Dad has been trying to be both Mom and Dad but there is nothing like Mom's hugs and kisses.

Nice! Togetherness is a far better cause for anticipation than just new toys. I was always most especially excited for my older siblings to come home from college.
Deletehow about a giant bear instead of a present? the bear tells the 8-year-old girl to come with him on an adventure and they will travel by flying... now it sounds too much like like that East of the sun & West of the moon. no matter, who doesn't like an adventure instead of a present?

'sherry' ... oh oh all right- must get everything right for him ... when, when - jumping up and down and running round and round .. oh when, when ...
ReplyDeleteDaarling go to bed - then Santa will come sooner ... caaaaan't - dooon't want to ... want to see him ... I'm going to give you a good night kiss and tomorrow will be Christmas and Santa will ahave visited ... probably, but only if you're good and go to sleep ... head sinks into pillow, exhaustion takes over ... quiet reigns .... now for that sherry, before Santa drinks the lot!
